In June 2022, Pataxó Indigenous people were attacked by gunmen reportedly affiliated to landowners, who invaded Indigenous lands with around 50 pickup trucks. The armed men came from municipalities in the extreme south of Bahia and from other regions, such as the south and the lower south, and expelled the Indigenous group without any judicial authorization. The action took place in the area around the National Historical Park of Monte Pascoal, in the village of Cassiano, after the indigeous group took back the Barra Velha Indigenous Land, that had been confiscated by the former landowner of Brasília Farm. The indigenous people denounced that in addition to the landowners and gunmen, military police officers were also involved in the action.
