In August 2021 human rights defender Pedro Velasco Tumiño was travelling out of the town of Piendamó, Cauca department, Colombia when a motorbike with two armed men, pulls up alongside his car and attempts to open the driver’s door, chasing him, before he manages to escape. He was actively resisting the operations of the paper company Smurfit Kappa – Cartón de Colombia S.A. His community has been under threat since 2021, when Indigenous, campesino, and Afro-descendant communities began reclaiming their lands from Smurfit Kappa.
