Peru: Murder of human rights defender Quinto Inuma Alvarado

Vicki Brown, FPP

Quinto Inuma Alvarado had been fighting for the collective titling of his community Santa Rosillo de Yanayacu-Huimbayoc, the base of the Coordinating Committee for the Development and Defence of the Indigenous Peoples of the San Martin Region (CODEPISAM). The defender was denouncing indiscriminate logging in Huimbayoc. In response to a complaint from the community, the Tarapoto Provincial Prosecutor's Office Specialised in Illicit Drug Trafficking Crimes entered the communal territory and investigated the damage caused to the forest. Quinto was shot three times on his way back from a seminar for environmental defenders.
