Seven Ugandan community land rights defenders, namely Richard Ssemombwe, Esau Ategeka, Godfrey Bukenya, Yona Ssebanenya, Paula Sinamenya, Fenehansi Kaberuka, and Sam Sserugo, were sentenced to 34 and 15 years in jail, allegedly for causing the death of a manager of the Formosa Forest Company. Local community members claim that the prosecution is unfounded, and that the death resulted from the ongoing clashes with communities and the company’s continued violence and land grabbing.
