S. Korea: Safety accidents kill workers in SPC bakery factories two years in a row

On 15 Oct 2022, a worker in her 20s died when her upper body was caught in a sauce mixer machine while working at the SPC-affiliated SPL bakery plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. Police investigation found the worker was working alone when the accident happened in violation of safety regulations. On 23 Oct 2022, a worker at SPC affiliate Shany lost his finger while working at the company's baking factory in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. This death and accident prompted police investigation into SPC's adherence to safety regulations as well as boycott against SPC-made products.

On 10 Aug 2023, a 56-year-old woman who was caught in a machine at SPC Group’s Shany confectionery factory in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, died. While the woman was working with another co-worker as a team, the co-worker turned on a machine without taking proper safety steps.

Timeline
