Spain: 4 die in building collapse at hotel construction site, incl. three migrant workers from Ecuador, Mali & Guinea; past inspections identified issues with building structure

In October 2025, numerous outlets including the BBC and The New York Times reported that four people have died in a building collapse at a construction site in Madrid, including three migrant workers from Ecuador, Mali, and Guinea,

The building, purchased for USD29 million by Saudi Arabian real estate investor RSR Singular Assets Europe, was being renovated into a four-star hotel. The building was being developed by Spanish construction company, Rehbilita. Both companies were contacted by The New York Times but did not respond to requests for comment.

According to the reports, in previous inspections the building was classified as "unfavourable" due to issues with its structure. Police have opened an investigation into the incident, though the exact cause remains unknown. The mayor of Madrid stated that: “It’s obvious that there was material piled up on the sixth floor, and therefore it could have influenced the building’s collapse.”
