UAE: 54 Nepali workers employed by facilities management co. Tornado Group allege exploitative conditions & ask for repatriation; co. denies the allegations

In July 2024, My República released an article alleging 54 Nepali workers are trapped in exploitative working conditions in the UAE. The workers were recruited by Osho Recruiting for gardening jobs at Tornado Group. They allege several labour rights violations, including:

  • Contract substitution: the workers say they believed they were migrating for gardening jobs, but instead were assigned jobs in forest management and date picking.
  • Unsuitable living conditions: the workers say they have been “locked up without food or water” and over 25 workers are living in one room. There is a lack of water and the workers say they are exposed to high temperatures. Workers say they were promised salaries that did not materialise after arrival. The workers say another 54 Nepali workers who also were recruited by Osho Recruiting are being "held hostage" in the opposite building.
  • Occupational health and safety concerns: the workers allege they work in a ‘large jungle’ with a lack of medical facilities nearby. The workers described the worksite as “extremely frightening”.
  • Recruitment fee charging: some of the workers allege Osho Recruiting Agency and an agent associated with the company charged recruitment fees.
  • Barriers accessing remedy: the workers say they informed Osho Recruiting Agency of their situation, but were threatened in response.

The workers are requesting repatriation from the UAE.

In July, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Osho Recruiting and Tornado Group to respond to the article. Tornado Group’s response can be read in full below. Osho Recruiting did not respond.

On 31 July, My Republica reported that the National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over the case.
