Uganda: Gov’t continues to crackdown on anti-EACOP protesters; incl. co. responses and non-responses
On 9 August 2024, police arrested 47 students from different Universities who were protesting the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The students were raising concerns about alleged environmental destruction and human rights harms related to the pipeline. They were released within a day after identifying themselves.
On 26 August, 21 people were arrested in Kampala as they were marching towards the Parliament and the head offices of TotalEnergies and CNOOC to hand in a petition against EACOP. They have been charged and were granted bail on 6 September 2024.
