Ukraine: Local community opposes development of Burtyn graphite deposit over environmental concerns
Tomorrow, public hearings will be held regarding the controversial graphite deposit development, 29 December 2024
Recently, it was announced that public consultations will begin regarding the environmental impact assessment report for graphite and underground technical water extraction at the Horodnyavska section of the Burtyn deposit. The Mykhailyutska community has come out against the graphite mining project.
Villagers are convinced that the permit for subsoil use was issued illegally, as the village of Zamorochennia lies directly within the quarry’s boundaries, yet it is not even mentioned in the report. According to the villagers, the development of the deposit will lead to a drop in groundwater levels and contamination with harmful substances.
Now, only at this stage, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine is announcing public hearings using semi-secretive methods. Due to martial law, these hearings are being conducted via videoconference.
