Uzbekistan: Dam collapse leaves at least 90,000 displaced and several dead; questions of corruption around construction companies involved
The Sardoba dam collapsed after just three years, causing destruction in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Many victims in temporary housing say they are left cold and without adequate food. Others say only those who bribe officials or have political connections have received funds to rebuild their homes.
According to reporting, officials have prevented journalists from investigating the disaster and reporting on the mistreatment of victims.
Preliminary findings of an investigation have suggested "irregularities in the design, construction and operation of the dam."
According to reports, Senator Abdugani Sanginov has been placed on the investigation commission, despite his close involvement in building the dam. Sanginov and his family members head several of the companies involved in the dam's construction.
