The Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) has called on the Zimbabwean government to urgently intervene in what it describes as serious human rights and environmental abuses linked to a US$1 billion cement and mining project in Magunje, Mashonaland West, run by the Chinese firm West International Holdings and its local partner, Labenmon Investments. The organisation alleges widespread forced displacements, environmental pollution, intimidation of villagers, and exploitation of workers, including unsafe working conditions, below-minimum wages, and lack of formal contracts. Villagers in Kapere and nearby communities were reportedly evicted without compensation after fraudulent consultations, with some residents misled or coerced into surrendering their land. CNRG also reported the arrest of local resistors and threats by armed soldiers against its staff, raising concerns of state complicity. Additionally, the Magunje Dam is reportedly contaminated by plant effluent, and fires linked to land clearing have destroyed farmland.
The Resource Centre unsuccessfully reached out to West International Holdings to respond to the allegations raised by the CNRG.
