Japan: As customers place more importance on ESG, SME automakers race to become carbon neutral and continue business

"中小部品メーカー、脱炭素が取引条件に 自動車が先行," 4 June 2024

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

Due to the risk of losing business with large companies if they are slow to respond to decarbonisation, small and medium-sized parts manufacturers, particularly in the automotive industry, are rushing to take measures toward carbon neutrality.

The president of AIZEN Co.,Ltd., a supplier of major engine parts for Suzuki, said that as customers are placing a great deal of importance on ESG, the company will not be able to continue doing business unless it makes serious efforts toward decarbonisation.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said an increasing number of small and medium-sized businesses are taking advantage of support from financial institutions and government agencies.
