Liberia: OPIC Office of Accountability investigates US-funded project after it receives hundreds of complaints of human rights abuses

"Liberia: US investigates abuses", 8 Aug 2014: Accountability Counsel in partnership with Green Advocates International is assisting hundreds of Liberians who suffered serious environmental and human rights abuses from a US-funded biomass project. The project, which was intended to rejuvenate rubber farms and generate renewable energy instead led to serious worker’s rights violations, water contamination, harm to forests, and untimely loss of livelihoods for farmers and charcoal producers....[H]undreds of affected Liberians filed complaints with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the US-agency that funded the project, demanding an investigation into the harms...the president of OPIC...direct[ed]...the OPIC Office of Accountability to conduct an investigation....the Office of Accountability travelled to Liberia and held meetings with the complainants and other relevant parties... [It is yet to] release its findings...
