Lone survivor of scaffolding accident seeks restitution [Canada]

For the past two years, Dilshod Marupov has been confined to a dark North York apartment, barely able to walk…On Christmas Eve 2009…Marupov was one of five migrant workers…to fall 13 storeys from a collapsed scaffold outside a Kipling Ave. apartment building. Marupov…was the lone survivor…Marupov is seeking more than $18 million in damages from the labour ministry; Metron Construction Corp., his employer; Ottawa-based Swing ’N Scaff, the scaffolding company; and the apartment building owners. The lawsuits, part of a joint action with the families of other victims, have not yet been heard in court…In August 2010, after a seven-month investigation, the labour ministry issued 61 charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act against Metron and Swing ’N Scaff carrying up to $500,000 in fines and up to a year in jail for some supervisors and executives.
