Measure Puts SUVs [sport-utility vehicles] on Road to Tax Credits Congress [USA]

Incentives to aid sales of 'hybrids' had bipartisan support. Now industry is said to have violated spirit of the deal. In an unusual meeting of the minds, environmentalists and auto industry representatives got together with lawmakers earlier this year and agreed on a new incentive to advance both of their causes: a tax credit for fuel-efficient "hybrid" cars. The idea seemed like a winner. Now, with legislation approved by the House and headed to the Senate, environmentalists say the industry has finagled the fine print to give the tax credit to the very epitome of excess: gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles.
