Miners Not Welcome in Indonesian Protected Forests

The government of South Kalimantan on the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo, and Dayak Indignenous Commmunity leaders have denounced the mining company Placer Dome for its plans to begin mining operations in one of the last protected tropical forests in Indonesia...The Council of Dayak Meratus, representing 115 communities, issued a passionately worded letter of protest...urging President Megawati Soekarnoputri to reject Placer Dome's plans and to consider that mining activities would threaten their water sources, their sacred sites, and their livelihoods.
