Miners threaten action over workplace safety case [Australia]

The miners' union is threatening widespread industrial action over an attempt by two companies to overturn occupational health and safety laws. Global company Xstrata has lodged an appeal against more than 50 criminal convictions over the deaths of four workers at the Gretley Colliery near Newcastle in 1996. Centennial Coal is appealing against criminal convictions for the death of a worker at the nearby Awaba mine in 1998.
