Miners dig deep in HIV fight

Melbourne-based biotech Virax is...funding a clinical trial of its HIV drug entirely from...donations [by] a consortium of mining companies, led by BHP Billiton and including Rio Tinto and three Japanese companies... Virax CEO David Beames said...the South African trial would make it quicker for AIDS sufferers in the region to gain access to the drug...He said it was an innovative way of raising funding for a trial...”that otherwise depends on the largesse of big pharma companies.”

Mining Companies Join BHP to Fund HIV Vaccine Trials

...Virax Holdings...said seven global mining companies joined a group led by BHP fund the first emerging-country trials of its HIV/AIDS therapeutic vaccine. The trials will take place in South Africa... BHP is leading participants including Gold Fields Ltd., Harmony Gold Mining Co., Lonmin Plc, Mitsubishi Materials Corp. [part of Mitsubishi], Nippon Mining and Metals Co. [part of Nippon Mining], Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. [part of Sumitomo Group] and Rio Tinto Ltd.
