Murder of NUM shop steward at Marikana ‘part of total onslaught’ (So. Africa)

Rising tensions at Marikana claimed another life…as a female National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shop steward was gunned down…just metres from the NUM office at Lonmin...The attack comes almost a year after the massacre of 34 mineworkers by police…[The] killing is an indication that the turf war between the NUM and Amcu [Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union] is far from over, even though the NUM has officially lost recognition status for the largest bargaining unit at Lonmin. The platinum producer is now negotiating a recognition agreement with Amcu. NUM...said the incident was "part of a total onslaught against us" by Amcu… Lonmin...said: "The details and reasons for the shooting are not yet clear but the South African Police Service are investigating."
