Myanmar: Garment factory declines rehiring of workers; strikers demand better pay & treatment

"Chinese garment factory refuses to rehire 30 workers", 13 September 2018

Chinese-owned Fu Yuen garment factory will not rehire 30 workers it sacked last month for violating factory rules and actions that decreased its output, factory officials said.

...The workers, who were members of the factory labour union, were dismissed without warning by the management...triggering a strike by about 300 union members.

The strikers, who barricaded the entrances to the factory, made nine demands, which, besides rehiring the sacked workers, included paying for overtime, increasing the service skill fees of workers, and treating all workers with respect.

They also demanded that foreigners not be allowed to supervise workers, the installation of fans in the ironing department, and hiring more workers for sections that need them.

“We haven’t violated any laws. We will fight to the end because they fired us in violation of labour laws to break up the union,” factory union chair Ma Thet Htar Swe said.

...Company officials said the strikers, except for the 30 sacked workers, would be allowed to return to work after the strike ends.
