Myanmar: Garment workers strike amidst labour dispute after factory fires 7 workers

More than 100 workers at a Chinese-owned factory in Yangon went on strike after a labour dispute with management resulted in the sacking of seven co-workers...

The striking workers at Cixing Knitting Factory called on the management to rehire the seven workers and to obey labour laws and labour agreements.  “We only want our jobs back. We don’t want any compensation,” Ma Mon Mon Aung said.

The workers said the seven workers were sacked... without warning amid demands by the workers for management to honour the terms of their labour agreement... According to the agreement, the factory would pay skilled labour fees in addition to the minimum daily wage... They also agreed that foreigners would not be allowed to supervise the workers directly and that all supervisors and heads would treat workers with respect.

The striking workers called on the government to take action against the factory for repeatedly violating the labour agreement and the employment contract. They are also asked the government to take action against the factory for violating the International Labour Organization’s Convention 87 on the freedom of association and protection of the right to organise.

Factory officials could not be reached for comment on Sunday. Efforts to reach the factory’s human resources manager also failed...
