Myanmar: Govt. sets new rules for contract farming to reduce farmers' debt burden

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has released rules for contract farming to boost Myanmar's agriculture sector.

U Ye Tint Tun, director general of the Department of Agriculture, said the rules aim to ensure that farmers benefit from deals with private companies.

"We want farmers to be self-reliant," he said. "We want to eliminate practices such as buying agrochemicals on credit and paying back the loans after harvest.

The rules for companies, businesses owners, and associations, include having to provide quality input, fix premiums agreed by both sides, and using a record-keeping system. If farmers lose crops through natural disasters, the contract must be renegotiated.

The aim of the guidelines for contract farming is to reduce the debt-burden of farmers, and attracting more investment to the sector, U Ye Tint Tun said.
