National Human Rights Commission of Malaysia responds to complaint about adverse environmental & social impacts of Don Sahong dam construction

Last month, the National Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) released its 2015 Annual Report. The report contains SUHAKAM's decision on a complaint filed in October 2014 by six NGOs, which alleged the Don Sahong dam construction project would deplete a major food source for local communities. The complaint also urged SUHAKAM to ensure Malaysian project developer, Mega First Corporation, had complied with its obligation to engage and inform affected communities. SUHAKAM declined to investigate the matter but issued several recommendations advising the Malaysian governement and Mega First Corporation to monitor adverse environmental impacts and incorporate human rights principles in business activities.
