Newmont's Indonesia Legal Woes Remain in Spite of Victory

Newmont...this week scored a significant legal victory when an Indonesian court threw out a $133m civil lawsuit filed by the government in connection with pollution near its Minahasa Raya mine...In an associated criminal hearing...Newmont faces almost $80,000 in fines and one of its senior executives is threatened with up to 10 years in prison over allegations it dumped heavy metals into a bay near the now-closed Minahasa Raya mine, causing illnesses in villagers....Newmont is adamant it did nothing wrong, and that its use of a system to dump treated mining waste...was in accordance with the mine's contract with the government and with international standards. The company...has been backed up by the World Health Organisation and Australia's top government laboratory. [also refers to Barrick Gold, Golden Star Resources]
