Nigeria: Graduate Association threatens to disrupt oil production unless companies provide training, employment to community

'Unemployed graduates threaten oil companies in Abia community', 30 Sep 2015: Over 200 unemployed graduates from Owaza, the oil producing community of…Abia State, have threatened to stop further exploration of crude oil in the area if the six oil companies operating in the area refuse…to implement…a memorandum of understanding...[signed] with…communities...According to…[Owaza Graduates Association ]…indigenes…[must] be given employment opportunities [by]…the…oil companies operating in the area. They lamented that for over 58 years of oil exploration…no graduate indigene has been given full employment. They…[are] used as casual workers and…dropped at will without…reasonable remuneration. The group, particularly, frowned at the fact that Shell…had been operating without a memorandum of understanding…den[ying]…indigenes the opportunity…[to] enjoy…the benefit of…oil deposits…They emphasized that they were not after royalty for land acquisition…“graduate employment must be given to Owaza graduates and the association must be part of every  MOU…All…oil companies…must make provision for industrial training for Owaza students.”
