No Dirty Gold campaign sends 11-retailer Valentine to U.S. gold miners

With Valentine’s Day approaching, the No Dirty Gold campaign has resurrected with 11 more U.S. jewelry retailers...announcing their support for more socially and environmentally responsible mining... Meanwhile, the...campaign stepped up its pressure on...Target urging activists to...[ask] store managers to not sell consumers so-called “dirty” gold. Among the retailers that announced their support for the Non Dirty Gold campaign’s Golden Rules criteria this year are the top U.S. jewelry retailer Wal-Mart and fourth-ranked QVC, as well as Fred Meyer and Littman Jewelers [both part of Kroger], Ben Bridge Jeweler [part of Berkshire Hathaway], Brilliant Earth, TurningPoint, Boscov’s and Michaels Jewelers... Last year eight retailers joined the campaign including Tiffany & Co., Cartier [part of Richemont], Piaget [part of Richemont], Van Cleef & Arpels [part of Richemont], the Signet Group, Helzberg Diamonds [part of Berkshire Hathaway], and Zale Corp. Leading Retailers Pledge Their Gold Jewelry Will Sparkle Responsibly

...11 jewelry retailers are announcing their support for the No Dirty Gold campaign's Golden Rules criteria for more socially and environmentally responsible mining, bringing the total number of jewelry retailers supporting the Golden Rules up to 19...The companies added to the list this year are: Fred Meyer and Littman Jewelers [both part of Kroger], Ben Bridge Jeweler [part of Berkshire Hathaway], Wal-Mart, QVC [part of Liberty Media], Birks & Mayors, Commemorative Brands (parent company of Balfour, ArtCarved, and Keystone class rings brands), Brilliant Earth, Leber Jeweler, TurningPoint, Boscov's and Michaels Jewelers... The campaign also added the Target Corporation...to its laggards list... Last year, the following eight companies endorsed the Golden Rules on Valentine’s Day, one of the biggest jewelry-buying holidays in the United States. These companies are: Zale Corp., the Signet Group (the parent firm of Sterling and Kay Jewelers), Tiffany & Co., Helzberg Diamonds [part of Berkshire Hathaway], Fortunoff, Cartier [part of Richemont], Piaget [part of Richemont], and Van Cleef & Arpels [part of Richemont].

Canadian gems leave buyers conflicted - Does buying them help or hurt Africa?

Is selling Canadian diamonds a solution to the human-rights problems that have surrounded parts of the African diamond industry? Or is it a feel-good measure that ultimately hurts African miners and citizens?.."Brilliant Earth offers diamonds that are individually tracked to their origin in Canada, which has very strict labor and environmental standards," said [co-founder Beth] Gerstein... But Brilliant Earth's business model is catching flak from...activists who monitor the rights of African diamond miners... [H]uman-rights activists say more must be done to improve working conditions of African miners -- but avoiding African diamonds isn't the way to do that.
