Diseases that affect only the poor do not provide big profits, which means the pharmaceuticals industry concentrates on the rich-country ailments...The industry has responded with its own initiatives. GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca have opened new infectious disease laboratories, while Novartis has set up a research institute in Singapore to work on TB and dengue fever...Most of the non-profit groups insist they see the drugs companies as partners, not rivals.
