One dead, over 20 hurt in Peru copper clashes

One protester died and more than 20 people were injured, including a police officer with a gunshot wound, in clashes over a large British-run copper project in northern Peru [Rio Blanco, run by Monterrico Metals], police said on Tuesday...Peru, where half the population lives in poverty, has been facing a surge in anti-mining protests since 2003...Most protests are by local farmers who fear their land is at risk, or by residents who want rich foreign companies to give back more -- in the form of roads, schools and hospitals -- in poor mining regions the state has neglected for years.
