Peru: Communities opposed to MMG mining project Las Bambas ask that state of emergency ends

[The Peru Observatory of Mining conflicts reported on 17th January that] Challhuahuacho (Cotabambas, Apurímac province’s) civil society leaders and local authorities are against the indefinite state of emergency declared in the site where the Chinese giant MMG Las Bambas [part of China Minmetals] operate.  They asked to put an end to the state of emergency in place in this zone since over 120 days.  They also alleged that the mining company wants to modify for the fourth time the project by means of a Grounded Technical Report, without including the population… “We come here representing over 30,000 inhabitants.  We have three main agenda issues: to modify the environmental impact study, done without consulting the population; the end of the extended state of emergency that has been in place in total almost for six months, and, the unfulfillment by the Govt. of its commitments to implement the Challhuahacho Development Plan, to safeguard the investments of over 700 million Soles in this district,” Antolin Chipana, Mayor of Challhuahuacho declared… Leaders demanded to resume conversations that had been suspended unilaterally by the Govt. since 2016.
