[Xstrata/SMI response to allegations of responsibility for killing of anti-mining activist in the Philippines]

SMI wishes to express its sympathy and condolences for the colleagues and loved ones of Boy Billanes over his sudden death…SMI also wishes to confirm that the company has no connection to the death of Mr Billanes. Any allegations linking SMI to this incident are totally untrue and without any basis in fact…As many from the communities associated with the Tampakan project will attest, SMI has always respected and will continue to respect human rights and the rights of stakeholders to express their views, including about the Tampakan Project…

Killing of environmental activist aimed to silence mining opposition in Mindanao [Philippines]

The progressive alliance of environmentalists and ecologists, Kalikasan People's Network for the Environment (Kalikasan-PNE), sees the killing of Elizer "Boy" Billanes as an effort of the State forces, hired as private armies by big mining companies in Mindanao, to weaken or completely silence the opposition against large-scale mining in Mindanao… activists strongly believe that Billanes was killed due to his strong environmental advocacy and effective leadership in opposing the Tampakan copper-gold mining project, a priority mining project of the Arroyo administration in Far South Mindanao…

…Eliezer “Boy” Billanes, leader of the Anti-Development Aggression Coalition, was shot dead by unidentified men...yesterday…The murder has outraged Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez who said that the killing is a serious attack on human rights…Billanes’ group leads the opposition to the Tampakan Copper-Gold project in South Cotabato of Xstrata, one the biggest mining companies in the world…Environmental group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment said…the recent killing is part of the “dirty tactics” of transnational mining companies to coerce the growing resistance of people opposing large-scale mining projects…

Xstrata-SMI and Task Force Kitaco must be held accountable for the brutal slaying of the anti-mining activist Boy Billanes [Philippines]

Task Force KITACO, the 27th IB, and the multinational company Xstrata-SMI must be held accountable for the premeditated murder of Boy Billanes…the 27th IB under TF Kitaco had been conducting a massive military operation in the mining areas of Xstrata SMI…to flush out NPA rebels in the area but in actual fact had been harassing and threatening the residents on the suspicion that they were against the mining company…Earlier, Boy Billanes had been receiving death threats for his anti-mining and environmental activism...
