Prestea demonstrates against poor living conditions [Ghana]

The people of Prestea...[have] protested against...the deplorable state of the town and worsening economic conditions. Led by...chief of the town, Nana Nteboah Pra IV...residents ...carr[ied] placards...which...read: “Surface mining will kill us”...“Bring back processing mining plant”... “Prestea-Himan deserves better roads”...According to the demonstrators, the bad roads...wanton use of military personnel...poor conditions of the...underground mine and unemployment were making life unbearable for them...They also cited the failure of Golden Star Resources Limited to reopen the underground mine...it...closed for maintenance for almost 12 years...[saying] the once-vibrant Prestea had now become a ghost town...[T]he protestors...submitted a petition to President John Mahama...[and said] "If Golden Star Resources cannot reopen the underground mine, the government should...hand it over to another company to employ our men,"...
