Report: Liberia Violating Sanctions
Liberia has been using money earned from its maritime fleet to purchase weapons in violation of U.N. sanctions, a report released Monday said. A panel of U.N. experts set up to monitor Liberia's compliance with the arms embargo found that the country's U.S.-based shipping agent made four money transfers to non-governmental accounts last year, a deviance from usual company procedures. The panel's investigation traced the transfers to a company called San Air General Trading. The 130-page report detailed San Air's involvement in many arms shipments to Liberia and the use of its accounts to receive money for weapons.
