Researcher welcomes proposal re binding treaty on business & human rights as a “step forward” but says capitalism remains the “problem”

"The business of human rights", 11 Dec 2014

[A]t this year's session of the Human Rights Council... [a resolution was adopted] '...to elaborate an international legally binding instrument on Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises with respect to human rights.'...Currently, states and corporations can act with impunity, so a legally binding instrument would be a step forward...But it will not get to the root of the problem...The UN refuses to acknowledge that the problem is not legalization but capitalism...Capitalism is not compatible with human rights. At least in its current unabashed form. Corporations want to keep costs low and profits high, which is why abuses occur...We need to have a more open conversation about the capitalist world economy and who it really benefits. We need to work to reduce inequality, through critiquing and deconstructing the current economic model. We need to start talking about a grassroots movement to restructure the economy and our society from the bottom-up, in a manner which favours people over profit.
