Russian pensioner who died in police custody possibly wrongly accused

Prosecutors in St. Petersburg said…they are "checking the legality" of police officers and supermarket employees regarding the detention of an 81-year-old woman who was accused of stealing butter and died in police custody. The butter that the woman was accused of stealing was found in her shopping basket, and she even offered to pay for it after the accusation was made, prosecutors said in a statement. Federal Investigative Committee spokesman…said in a statement…that a criminal case has been opened into the death, and that an investigation is under way.
