‘Marikana Support Campaign protests at Mogwase court’ 12 August 2019

Friday will mark the seven anniversary of the Marikana massacre. The Marikana Support Campaign staged a march on Monday at the Mankwe Magistrates Court in Mogwase, North West, to commemorate the massacre and demand justice for the families of the deceased miners. Clement Manyathela on The Xolani Gwala Show speaks to Right to Know campaign manager Thami Nkosi about the march.

One of the things not occupying public memory right now is the fact that that there are current cases that are continuing in the Mogwase Magistrates Court where the then commissioner of police when the massacre happened Mr [William] Mpempe and his co-accused are appearing in the court. There is very little appetite in putting that into the public discourse.

We're here to say we're going to draw attention to this and actually put as much pressure as we possibly can to try and get justice and ensure that these police get prosecuted for the massacre and be held responsible. Right to Know also wants the Farlam Commission report into the massacre to be made public. It could shed some light with regard to some of the things that transpired.
