South Korean forced laborers win 1st legal victory

South Korea's Supreme Court has ruled in favor of nine South Koreans who demanded Japanese firms pay them for forced labor during Japan's colonial rule of Korea. The Supreme Court says it repealed lower court decisions that ruled against the South Koreans seeking unpaid wages and financial redress from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries...and Nippon Steel...for forced labor from 1941 to 1945. The court said...that it's the first time a ruling has favored South Koreans seeking such compensation from Japanese firms.

La Cour suprême sud-coréenne a condamné ce jeudi les entreprises Mitsubishi Heavy Industries et Nippon Steel à dédommager 11 de leurs anciens employés Coréens qui avaient été forcés à travailler pour elles au Japon durant la période de domination coloniale du Japon sur la Corée de 1910 à 1945...Les poursuites lancées au Japon contre les deux sociétés dans les années 90 s'étaient soldées par un échec...Les plaignants coréens se sont plaints d'avoir été exposés à des conditions mettant leur vie en danger et de continuer à subir les séquelles des mauvais traitements qu’ils ont reçus...Durant la période de domination coloniale japonaise, des millions de Coréens ont été enrôlés de force dans les entreprises et l'armée japonaises.
