Sri Lanka: Making 'Equal Pay' work

According to the Department of Census and Statistics report on employment, the distribution of Semi-Government Sector employees in 2012 had 70.4 per cent of the permanent cadre being made up of male employees. Women only made up 29.6 per cent of the permanent cadre. In terms of numbers in the position as 'senior officials', only 29.8 per cent were women...However, in the category of 'clerks and related work' the women outnumbered the men by a margin of 53.1 per cent...Gender discrimination based on pay may also be greater in the informal economy. A major share of Sri Lanka's economy, approximately 60 per cent falls within the informal sector and does not come under the supervision of labour laws or labour inspectors. The glass ceiling thus is very much real phenomenon for women in all sectors.
