Statement of the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar

The importance of human rights standards and principles shaping the process of economic development in Myanmar needs to remain a priority concern…I visited some of the relocation sites [in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone] and talked to the farmers, who were struggling with the loss of their livelihoods and adjusting to a new life which they had not chosen…[In the copper mines in Monywa] local grievances remain over compensation, forced relocation, livelihoods and health problems…Instead of oppressing these voices, the concerns of the local community need to be addressed…and the political will needs to be found to address the human rights dimensions of the project[s]…[refers to Wanbao]
