Tough months ahead for Brooks and Coulson

It's hard to exaggerate how devastating the implications of yesterday's events are for News Corporation's British operations, and especially for the two former editors of the News of the World…Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson...Alison Levitt QC, principal legal adviser to the Crown Prosecutor, announced the charges against Brooks, Coulson and six others…The prosecution will be attempting to prove…that two News of the World editors, the newspaper's managing editor…its news editor…two assistant news editors…and its…chief reporter…all knew about, and failed to prevent…a systematic culture of phone-hacking at the paper…Of course, all those charged are entitled to the presumption of innocence. We have no idea, as yet, what evidence the Crown will produce to prove the involvement of the eight accused in the systemic invasion of the privacy of hundreds.
