UK: UNICEF talks to children about data privacy and trust

Ironically children are often excluded from conversations about the threat of social media and internet, when they are the most vulnerable population and can easily be targeted by the big data companies. UNICEF spoke to children about health, privacy and trust in a digital world. They published a report on their findings which included:

  • Children are conscious of online privacy and want to know more about how they can protect themselves
  • They feel like they do not have much information and are willing to be educated, they believe that digital rights are human rights
  • They understand the pro's and con's of technology
  • Children do not trust companies to keep their information secure - they look to parents, governments and teachers for guidance
  • They are motivated and want to inspire change - they believe in a better world
