The Child Online Safety Assessment tool is based off of the Guidelines for Industry on Child Online Protection that were developed in a process led by UNICEF and ITU, and outline measures that companies can take to reduce risks to children posed by the online world, but also empower children by promoting their rights to participation. The excel-based tool is designed to support ICT companies in reviewing these issues by functional area, and offers different worksheets to assess policies and management systems by legal, human rights and CSR, human resources, procurement, product development and commercial focal points.

The tool outlines concrete measures companies can take to address challenges such as the transmission of child sexual abuse material, inappropriate content, online bullying and other forms of harmful behavior. They also offer advice on how companies can advance children’s rights and facilitate responsible digital citizenship, learning, and civic participation.
