On 9 August 2024, police arrested 50 individuals, including 47 students and three taxi drivers, who had planned to march to the Parliament and the National Environment Management Authority offices in Kampala to protest the East African Crude Oil Pipeline project. The students arrested included Shafik Kalyango and Humphrey Oundo.

The next day 45 out of the 47 student activists, who had been detained at the Jinja Road Police Station, were released.
