A meeting was convened between representatives of the Patria Nueva de Sucumbíos community, the political head of the Lago Agrio canton, Evelyn Ormaza - delegate of the Governor - and two representatives of the Canadian oil company Gran Tierra Energy, regarding alleged socio-environmental impacts of the company and the alleged breach of an agreement between the community and the corporation.

The meeting took place in the community park. During the meeting, gunshots killed three members of the community. Moments later, a person standing next to the defender and social leader Alejandro Lapo Tandazo shot him in the head, killing him on the spot and wounding a woman standing next to him. As they retreated, the killers shouted that they were not finished and that they would return to the community.
