Delfino Agustin Vidal was was a member of the Farmer Development Committee (Comité de Desarrollo Campesino), CODECA, an organisation that defends the rights of farmers against the imposition of economic projects such as palm oil, mining and hydroelectric dams. CODECA is made up of 3681 communities and over 10,000 members from 22 regions of the country. The movement has been the victim of threats and attacks in different parts of the country, and since 2014 has been particularly targeted due to their position in favour of energy nationalisation and against the privatisation of electricity in different parts of the country. He was leading a lawsuit against the energy company ENERGUATE and the State of Guatemala for the political prosecution he was subjected to because of his activism. On 21st January 2019 armed individuals shot him dead and burned the bus he was driving while he was still inside.
