Five Water Protectors, including Dion Ortiz, faced federal criminal charges arising from their arrests on 27 October 2016 for protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. In 2018, Dion Ortiz was sentenced to a 16-month federal prison term. According to Water Protector Legal Collective, Dion has had trouble with consistent employment since due to discrimination from his incarceration.
