Meta responds to allegations of allowing online harassment & abuse against climate scientists on its platform
Meta response to the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, 19 April 2023:
"We take bullying and harassment and climate misinformation seriously.
When it comes to bullying and harassment, context and intent matter. Bullying and harassment are often very personal — it shows up in different ways for different people, from making threats to make personally identifiable information public, to making repeated and unwanted contact.
Our Bullying and Harassment policy prohibits this type of content and behavior. Our policy also distinguishes between public figures and private individuals, since we want to allow free and open discussions about public figures. We permit more critical commentary of public figures than we do for private individuals, but any content must still remain within the limits outlined by our Community Standards. Over the past several years, we’ve expanded our protections for public figures to include the removal of degrading, sexualizing attacks; and we’ve increased protections for involuntary public figures like human rights defenders, journalists, and scientists. These standards are based on feedback from people and the advice of experts in fields such as technology, public safety and human rights.
Our Climate Science Center is a one-stop resource available in more than 150 countries, connecting people on Facebook with science-based news, approachable information and actionable resources from the world’s leading climate change organizations. The center includes detailed deep dives that go beyond the basics of climate-related subjects, tips for spotting misleading information and ways for individuals to take action. We continue to expand the availability of the Climate Science Center, and in countries where it isn’t yet available, we direct people to the UN Environment Programme when they search climate related terms on Facebook.
In addition, our fact-checking partners review and rate a wide range of climate-related claims, including false information that outside experts say undermines the existence or impacts of climate change, misrepresents scientific data and mischaracterizes mitigation and adaptation efforts.
More information about our approach to bullying and harassment is available here, and details on approach to climate content are available here."
