African Barrick Gold's response to the shooting of a villager during clashes between police & villagers at North Mara mine [Tanzania]

A number of people intruded onto the site in early January with the intent to steal gold bearing rocks from the mine. The intruders became aggressive to North Mara security personnel and the police were called in to protect the mine. As part of their action an intruder was shot and subsequently passed away. Whilst North Mara has requested the Police to investigate the circumstances, this is ultimately a matter within the jurisdiction of the law enforcement agencies of the Government of Tanzania.
