Alessandra Korap Munduruku (or Alessandra Munduruku) and Kabaiwun Munduruku are two of the main spokespersons for the defense of Munduruku territory. For this reason, they have been receiving several death threats. The Munduruku are one of the largest ethnic groups in Brazil, with territories along the Tapajós river, in the basin that connects the Amazon forest to the Cerrado, in the states of Pará, Amazonas and Mato Grosso. In addition to suffering from illegal logging and large government projects, the region is now one of the main targets for gold extraction in the country. The mining company Vale has 52 applications to exploit Munduruku indigenous land. The more than 14 thousand Munduruku indigenous people are divided by long lasting internal conflicts due to mining activities in the territory. These tensions are exacerbated by the protections accorded to the group of indigenous people dedicated to mineral extraction, disfavouring the others. Because of their opposition to extractive projects, Kabaiwun and Alessandra have been victim of threats and intimidation by a pro-mining Munduruku group. The indigenous pro-digging group is openly supported by the federal government.
