On January 23, Anastasia Shevchenko, a Coordinator with the Otkrytaya Rossiya (Open Russia) movement, was placed under house arrest. In April of 2017, the NGO was designated as “undesirable” by Russia's Prosecutor General’s Office. Among other activities, Open Russia provides support to victims of human rights violations and raises awareness about such issues as corruption and embezzlement of budget funds that involve government officials and businesses. Anastasia became the first ever person to be criminally charged with “repeated participation in the activities of an undesirable organization”. If convicted, she could face up to six years in prison for her peaceful activism. A week after Shevchenko’s arrest, her eldest daughter Alina was hospitalized and died of an acute respiratory condition. The authorities initially dismissed Shevchenko’s request to visit her daughter. Anastasia was finally given permission to see her daughter hours before her passing.
