As forced labour concerns grow, the Australian government is urged to toughen Anti-Slavery Act. On 30 January 2026, the Office of the Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner published a position paper regarding proposed reforms to the federal Modern Slavery Act. Core proposals of the Commissioner include two primary changes to strengthen the Anti-Slavery Act:
- Mandatory Due Diligence: Shifting from just reporting to a mandatory, risk-based obligation where entities must take "reasonable and proportionate action" to prevent and address slavery risks.
- High-Risk Declarations: Granting the Commissioner the power to officially declare specific products, services, or industries as "high risk," forcing businesses to address these specific areas in their reporting.
